Mathematics Instructor (#2FSM17)

 

The Chabot-Las Positas Community College District is seeking a Mathematics Instructor for Chabot College in Hayward. The position reports directly to the Division Dean.

 

Salary

The initial salary range is $52,242 - $80,348/yr depending on education and experience. (Funding: 100% District)

 

Assignment

The position is full-time, tenure track, 2008-2009 Academic Year.  Employment will begin on or about August 14, 2008.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: *Master's degree in mathematics or applied mathematics OR Bachelor's in either of the above AND Master's in statistics, physics, or mathematics education OR **the equivalent.

 

*Degrees in Progress: To be conferred on or before July 1, 2008, will be considered, provided that the applicant also submits (1) an up-to-date transcript, (2) a photocopy of the degree requirement from the school catalog, and (3) proof of current course(s) and enrollment.

 

Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical and/or learning disabilities.

 

Particular Job Characteristics

•  Ability and willingness to teach a variety of mathematics courses, including developmental mathematics and statistics;

•  Willingness to participate in area, committee, and college- required activities;

•  Willingness to teach day and evening assignments.

Desirable Qualifications

•  Successful experience in teaching community college level mathematics or other related experience;

•  All course work necessary to earn a Master's Degree in Mathematics from an accredited college or university;

•  Academic records or degrees which indicate strong mathematical achievement within or beyond a Master's Degree (i.e., a standard algebra, analysis curriculum with additional work in statistics, numerical analysis, geometry, discrete mathematics, etc.);

•  Ability to modify and enhance instructional methodology to accommodate varied learning abilities;

•  Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form;

•  Ability to develop curriculum and curricular materials.

 

Supplemental Questionnaire

The following questions are intended to seek relevant information regarding your ability to teach mathematics. Please provide answers to the questions and attach to your application. Responses to each question should be ½ to 1 page long.

 

•  Please list all undergraduate and graduate level mathematics and statistic courses, the year each course was taken and the grade received in each course.

•  Conceptual understanding, as well as mechanics and application, have a role in the teaching of mathematics. Discuss the balance of these factors in a successful mathematics classroom. 

•  Describe a topic or concept that students have a difficult time grasping and describe how you approach this or would deal with it.

•  What are the particular challenges faced when teaching developmental math (arithmetic and algebra) and how do you meet these challenges?
