Surgical Technology Instructor/Program Director (#3FTE08)
The Chabot-Las Positas Community College District is seeking a Surgical Technology Instructor/Program Director for Las Positas College in Livermore. The position reports directly to the Division Dean and is primarily located off-campus at the ValleyCare Health System Facility in Livermore.
Salary
The initial salary placement range is $56,202 - $80,348/yr, depending on education and experience.
Assignment
The position is full-time (tenure track), first year contract, Spring Semester 2009. Employment will begin as soon as possible.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience: Associate Degree in any science; OR Bachelor’s Degree in any science; AND a Certificate of Surgical Technology issued by the National Board of Surgery Technology and Surgery Assisting; OR be eligible to sit for the certifying exam within the first year of employment.
*Degrees in Progress: To be conferred on or before May 1, 2009 will be considered, provided that the applicant also submits (1) an up-to-date transcript, (2) a photocopy of the degree requirement from the school catalog, and (3) proof of current course(s) and enrollment.
Demonstrate sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical and/or learning disabilities.
Particular Job Characteristics

Demonstrated ability to enthusiastically teach all Surgical Technology courses in the College’s program;

Ability to design and implement new courses in Surgical Technology including a mock operating room;

Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form;

Ability to establish and coordinate clinical assignments and monitor students’ clinical progress;

Ability to recruit clinical preceptors and maintain communication with clinical sites and hospital and clinical site administrators;

Contribute to the assessment, screening, and selection of applicants to this special admissions program;

Contribute to the total operation of the instructional program of the Department, Division, and College;

Ability to adapt instructional techniques to accommodate varied learning styles and abilities, including distance learning, and a general understanding and use of technology in college process and communication;

Commitment to working successfully as a team with other instructors and colleagues;

Participation in campus professional activities, which include, but are not limited to: committee membership, curriculum development, staff meetings, and community outreach;

Ability to teach late afternoon, evening, weekend, distance learning, and/or off-campus classes, when scheduled as part of the regular teaching assignment;

Ability to represent and help develop the College’s Allied Health programs both on and off campus with representatives in the industry, and high school students, re-entry students, teachers, and counselors; when scheduled, as part of the regular teaching assignment;

Desirable Qualifications

College level teaching experience in Surgical Technology;

Experience working in and teaching in other allied health and/or health science disciplines;

Knowledge of the use of current technology and the use of current occupational and operational requirements in Surgical Technology;

Successful experience in the operating room;

Strong organizational skills.

The following questions are intended to seek relevant information regarding your ability to teach Surgical Technology. Please provide short answers to the following questions using the questionnaire provided in the mailed application packet, or your own paper, and attach to your application packet. - Provide a list of all Surgery Technology courses taken.
- Provide a list and description of responsibilities for all clinical job experiences outside an academic institution.
- Provide a description of your experience in teaching Surgical Technology. Include a list of classes you have taught, in chronological order, and state at which institution each class was taught. If you were not the instructor of record (i.e. if you were a Teaching or Clinical Assistant), please state that fact, and describe your actual duties in the class.

- Provide a copy of your favorite Surgery Technology mock operating room exercise and explain why you picked it.
- In no more than one page provide a discussion of your teaching philosophy and what you believe are your responsibilities outside the classroom to your students, to your department, to the college, and the community.
