Las Positas College Features FlashMob Computing Event in Conjunction with Major Exploration Faire on October
(Livermore, CA) - The Information and Technology Services Department of Las
Positas College (LPC) in Livermore will host a FlashMob Computing Event at
the campus on Monday, October 18, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Using 30 to 50 computers, Patrick Miller, a computer research scientist at
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and an adjunct professor with the University

power. Obtaining this additional power can be done either through the use
of larger, more expensive computers, or by creating a FlashMob computer. This
is best described as an ad-hoc temporary assembly of ordinary PCs running
special software to coordinate the PCs into one single super-computer that
can be set up and broken down on the same day or over a weekend to tackle
a specific problem.
The FlashMob event is in conjunction with the campus Major Exploration Faire,
this year themed The Circle of Life, open to all LPC students on the Quad
near building #700. A free barbecue lunch will be provided to all participants
who attend the event, which affords them the opportunity to meet instructors,
university professors, professionals in various majors, and join major oriented
clubs.

Las Positas College Introduces New Viticulture and Winery Technology Program
Select Program is one of a Handful of its Type Offered in California
(Livermore, CA) - Las Positas College (LPC) has announced plans to introduce
a new Viticulture and Winery Technology (VWT) Program during the 2004-2005
school year, with an expanded set of offerings expected the following year.
The program is designed to prepare students for a variety of careers in the
wine industry.
The program emphasizes the application of viticulture and winemaking theory
for decision-making in actual production situations, preparing students to
enter the wine industry directly, while those currently employed in the wine
industry may upgrade and update their skills and knowledge. People with a
general interest in wines, home winemaking, pairing wine and food, and viticulture
and grapevines may take classes for enjoyment and further knowledge. In addition,
a track will be available for students interested in transferring to a four-year
institution. More information about the program can be obtained at www.laspositascollege.edu/viticulture
"The beauty of this growing program is that it offers the flexibility to meet
the needs of a wide range of students. It is designed to accommodate the student
who is either seeking a career in the viticulture industry, or may already
be employed there. Additionally, anyone with a general interest in wines or
viticulture will also find classes for their enjoyment and knowledge," according
to Dr. Neal Ely, Dean of Academic Services at LPC.
Courses offered in the fall include VWT 12, Vineyard Soils, Fertilizers, and
Irrigation, and VWT 45, Food and Wine Pairing. Students may enter the program
at the level most suited to their needs and take as few or as many courses
needed to meet their objectives.
There are both Certificate and Associate in Science Degrees available to provide
students with the knowledge and skills essential for success. Students can
pursue their studies in either of two tracks: Viticulture (grape growing)
or Enology (wine making) by taking a series of production-oriented courses.
Students may also elect to complete an Associate in Science degree in either
Viticulture or Enology.
Viticulture is California's second largest agricultural industry and generates
in excess of $2.4 billion dollars each year to grape growers, an amount that
is multiplied many times over as the grapes are processed, marketed, sold
and consumed as fine wines.
The Livermore Valley is one of California's oldest wine regions and played
a pivotal role in shaping the state's wine industry. Attracted to the rich
winemaking tradition, climate, soil and geography, new winemakers and vineyardists
are working alongside fifth generation winegrowers to create a Livermore wine
renaissance.
