Las Positas College Observes Veteran's Day With Panel Discussion Featuring Notable Women Veterans

(Livermore, CA) - On Wednesday, November 16 at 7:00 p.m., the public is invited to attend a free panel discussion featuring first-hand accounts from women who served in the Vietnam War. The event is co-sponsored by the Las Positas History Department and the Vietnam Veterans of Diablo Valley.
Participants will hear the fascinating story of Dr. Doris "Lucki" Allen, who served in three tours of the Vietnam War for U.S. Army Intelligence. She was later an instructor of Prisoner of War Interrogation at the Army Intelligence Center and School, Fort Holabird, M.D., and worked as a special agent for Military Intelligence and the Defense Investigative Service until her retirement in 1980. Allen earned a Ph.D. in psychology from the Wright Institute in Berkeley; and in 1997, at the dedication of the Women in Military Service for America (WIMSA) Memorial in Washington, the Vice-President of the United States made a point of saluting her.
Joining her will be Allison Howell who served as a nurse in 1968 and 1969 at the 71st Evac Hospital in Pieiku. Howell, now a nursing case manager for Mt. Diablo Hospital, will also share accounts about her experience in Vietnam. Of the 10,000 military women who served in Vietnam, 90% were nurses.
Cathleen Cordova will also participate in the panel discussion. For the past 17 years, she has served as a Community Service Officer and Evidence Technician with the Pleasanton Police Department. From 1968-69 she worked with Army Special Services in Vietnam, and in Korea from 1970-72. Cordova founded the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #400 Speakers Bureau, and was the co-founder of "Circle of Sisters, Circle of Friends", a national archival program focused on civilian women who served during the Vietnam War, and who died as the result of that service. Cordova has received numerous awards for her service and commitment to our nation’s veterans.
All three women are on the Speaker's Bureau of the Vietnam Veterans of Diablo Valley, an organization that schedules and coordinates veterans for speaking engagements to students and the community. Those interested in having a veteran speak to their class or organization may contact the organization at (925) 323-1093, or online at www.vnvdv.com

Las Positas College Hosts Seventh Annual Major Exploration Faire

(Livermore, CA) - Students are invited to meet with faculty from Las Positas and local universities as well as community leaders at the Seventh Annual Major Exploration Faire hosted by Las Positas College (LPC) on Monday, October 10, 2005 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The Major Exploration Faire provides students with an opportunity to meet and speak with faculty and professionals about major choices and possible careers. Most students, at some time in their college career, are undecided about a major. All research proves that when students finally decide on the 'right' major, retention increases.
The theme of this year's event is "Shoot for the Stars". Two high-demand career areas are security and health. The United States spends about 11 percent of its gross national product, over $500 billion, each year on health care in a system that requires highly trained workers. Almost seven million people currently work in the health care field, and economists expect long-term job growth in this industry to be higher than average in the next decade or so. *Representatives from local nursing and dental hygiene programs as well as other health related majors will be at the Faire.
From the security field, students can meet with representatives of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Federal Marshalls, California Highway Patrol (CHP), the Alameda County Sheriff’s department, fire and police departments and others.
In addition, instructors from many of the LPC vocational programs and other disciplines, as well as university professors, will be at the Faire. For more information, please call Nancy Wright at (925) 424-1473.

Who: Event is limited to current Las Positas students, students from area high schools (high school counselors must contact Nancy Wright to schedule students) and alternate schools. The press is also invited.

What: Free Major Exploration Faire to expose students to many different majors and career possibilities.

When: Monday, October 10, 2005 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Where: Las Positas College 3033 Collier Canyon Road in Livermore

*Health Care Career Resource Center

Caldecott Award Winning Author Teaches Classes on Writing and Illustrating a Hero/ine Adventure Journey Tale
Las Positas College Community Education Courses Taught by Molly Bang, Well-Known Author and Illustrator of Children's Books

(Livermore, CA) - Las Positas College Community Education presents two rare opportunities for writers during the Spring session, when noted author and illustrator Molly Bang conducts two classes, one entitled "Writing a Hero/ine Adventure Journey Tale" and the other "How to Make Illustrations with Powerful Feelings".
Molly Bang has written and illustrated more than twenty books over the past 30 years, including three Caldecott Honor winners: When Sophie Gets Angry-Really, Really Angry . . .; Ten, Nine, Eight, and The Grey Lady and the Strawberry Snatcher. She has lived in Japan, India and Mali, and is interested in folklore and fables from many cultures. Bang uses a variety of artistic techniques in her books, including watercolor, collage, and three-dimensional dioramas such as her illustrations for One Fall Day. She currently divides her time between Falmouth, Massachusetts and California.
In "Writing a Hero/ine Adventure Journey Tale", the course will result in a personal tale for each class participant involving a hero or heroine whose story follows a pattern familiar in folktales and epics from around the world. The class is based on a pattern similar to that of the hero's journey of Joseph Campbell, wherein the protagonist leaves a defined home for a reason, taking along one object; meets one, two or three strangers; faces three or four dangers; triumphs at least over the final danger, and either returns home, or finds a new home. The triumph over the final danger will resolve the original reason for leaving home. Each session will be divided between discussion of folktales and brainstorming/writing exercises to help writers follow the pattern.
The fee for the course is $119 and classes will be held in Room 1603 on the Las Positas College campus on Thursday evenings from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. on April 21, April 28, May 5 and May 12.
Those with an interest in learning how to illustrate a story are encouraged to take Bang's class "How to Make Illustrations with Powerful Feelings" held immediately after the writing course on Thursdays from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on April 21, April 28, May 5 and May 12 in room 1603. Students will learn about the structural principles behind emotionally powerful illustrations and art and will create their own illustrations and pictures to accompany a folktale of their choice (or their Hero Adventure Tale for those enrolled in the writing course). The course fee is $89.
For more information about both classes, please contact the Community Education office at 925-373-5867, or visit www.laspositascollege.edu and click on Community Education in the top right-hand corner of the gray bar. "Turn Your Step-Family Into a Bonus Family" Seminar Offered Through Las Positas College Community Education
Noted Divorce and Step-Family Mediator Jann Blackstone-Ford, M.A. Shares Guidelines for a Happy Blended Family Life

(Livermore, CA) - Las Positas College Community Education will offer a one-day seminar entitled "Turn Your Step Family into a Bonus Family" on Saturday, March 5, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
This informative seminar is conducted by divorce and step-family mediator Jann Blackstone-Ford, M.A. who has been profiled in Newsweek and co-writes a column entitled Ex-Etiquette for Knight-Rider Newspapers along with Sharyl Jupe - who is also Jann's husband's ex-wife! The pair have appeared on The Oprah Show to share the success of their program entitled "Bonus Families", a term they coined to use in place of "step" (which conjures up a vision of Snow White's evil step mother!). Blackstone-Ford is the director of Bonus Families®, a non-profit organization dedicated to peaceful coexistence between divorced parents and their new families.
The seminar is designed for those who are currently living in a step-family as well as those considering combining families. The seminar explores reasonable expectations, plus demonstrates how to set goals, establish disciplinary guidelines, improve communication between family members, coordinate efforts between past and present and establish a forum for conflict resolution within the new family. Participants receive a copy of the book Ex-Etiquette by the presenters.
"When you consider that 50% of all first marriages end in divorce, more than 60% of second marriages don't make it and the failure rate escalates with additional marriages, it's obvious that many families are sharing the same experience. The concept of Bonus Families is a state of mind that is supported by guidelines based on reasonable discipline, expectations and decision making," says Blackstone-Ford.
The fee for the seminar is $79 and it will be held in Room 2206 on the Las Positas College campus. For more information, please contact the Community Education office at 925-373-5867 or visit www.laspositascollege.edu and click on Community Education in the top right-hand corner of the gray bar. A pdf of the catalog is there, and an online registration form that you can print out and mail in with a check for your registration fees.
