Email FAQs

Recently, we have received some questions about the timeout for the GROUPWISE WEB ACCESS EMAIL and we are sending out a few tips to eliminate some of the confusion.

WHEN DOES IT TIMEOUT?

First, we did make a change a week ago to double the timeout period which was previously 30 minutes.  The inactivity timeout for Groupwise WebAccess has now been increased to one hour.  This means that if you leave WebAccess alone for a period of one hour or perform actions that do not generate a call to the e-mail server, WebAccess will log you out.

Generating a call to the e-mail server means that you’re opening, reading, and sending e-mails and viewing and posting calendar items.  There is no call to the server while you are composing an e-mail, scrolling through items, or reading Help topics.  If you are ONLY composing an e-mail, you are not interacting with the server; therefore, your session times out after one hour.

WHAT DO I DO IF IT DOES TIMEOUT?

If your session times out in the middle of composing a message, you will be logged out.  However, you are prompted to log in again.  The Web Access interface will store the session information onto disk for a few hours at time out.  You will be prompted to log in again.  Enter your username and password, and the session will resume.  DO NOT CLOSE YOUR BROWSER.  If you close your browser, you will not be able to resume your work and you will lose the e-mail you’re composing.  For example, you opened WebAccess, started typing a new message and then got distracted for a while before pressing Send, and timed out.  When you do press Send, you will be prompted to re-enter your username and password and the message will be sent.  You will not lose your message – unless you press Cancel when prompted for the password.

HOW CAN I SAVE MY EMAIL BEFORE I SEND?

It’s recommended to use a word processor (Word) or text editor (Notepad) if you’re composing long messages or if you’re in and out of your desk.  Another alternative is to save your e-mail message to the "Work in Progress" folder periodically as you are composing.  To do this, click on the SAVE icon, then you will be prompted to hit OK and your message will be stored in the "Work in Progress" folder and you can save it as needed until you are ready to send.

LOG OUT WHEN FINISHED

Finally, we want to remind you to LOG OUT when you are finished with your session because the session will remain open for an hour unless you logout, even if you browse to another site.
